Where I've Been...

Tuesday, July 7, 2020

The answer to that is, quite literally, nowhere. As with everyone else, Covid-19 has thrown a wrench in so many of my plans for 2020 (like my resolution to visit three new countries) and I’m trying to adjust to the “new normal”. I’d be lying if I said it was easy. I’ve spent a lot of time reading, playing Animal Crossing, and nelecting my poor little blog. It’s hard to blog when you can’t travel, go out to eat, or go shopping. Thankfully now we are allowed to do those things (with limitations, of course) so I’m hoping to get back to writing. To catch you up, here’s the latest on my life..

We are STAYcationing this year! We’ve moved our October 2020 cruise on the Celebrity Equinox to a new, unknown as of now date in 2022 (we already have another cruise booked for Fall 2021, vaccine-pending). We figured we may as well take advantage of being forced to stay at home and actually get out to enjoy our province this summer. We are heading on a 5-day staycay (or shall I say… “baycay”) very soon and I can’t wait to share it on the blog. As of right now, we are planning to travel to Twillingate and the Rocky Harbour area so if anyone has any recommendations, I’d love to hear them! We are also planning a trip to Ferryland to have a lighthouse picnic and an overnight in St. John’s to celebrate our wedding anniversary (where did that year go?!). We’ve already visited Trinity and Port Rexton for the first of many trips to come this summer.

Port Rexton Brewery

We are tackling some home projects. Nothing major, but we are currently in the process of getting our house fully painted. We’ve hired a professional for the main area and we’ve been tackling the other rooms slowly but surely. We have one bedroom left to go in the basement apartment and then it will be complete. We are hoping to sell this house within the next year or so and a new coat of paint makes it look so fresh and clean. Once we sell this house, I can’t wait to take you guys along on the process of building our “forever home”! This house was only meant to be a short-term plan and we have so many ideas for our next home. Step one: we need to figure out where we want to build it.

Mug from Ethereal Boutique

I’ve done a lot of shopping lately. I’ve been trying to support local businesses during this tough time, but I’ve also bought quite a few new items for summer. I’m planning to do an Instagram story post as soon as our living situation is back to normal. I’ve also become an East Coast Mermaid rep for the Sandy Toes Shop. Do yourself a favour and go check them out – they have the cutest line of east coast/beach life apparel. Plus, the tank tops are so soft and comfortable. I have a feeling I’ll be living in them all summer long!

I think that’s all the news I have for now! What’s new with you guys? Leave a comment below!

What I Bought in January 2020

Wednesday, February 5, 2020

January isn’t normally a month where I buy a lot of unnecessary items. Given that it falls right after Christmas, I usually don’t need anything or have any money left to shop. However, we actually made some big purchases this year. Obviously I’m not doing this to brag or whatever (I hate that I have to say that at the beginning). I personally just find these posts interesting & helpful! Post contains affiliate links.

  1. First of all, if you follow me on Instagram then you know I picked up this adorable hat which was locally made and looks like it cost way more than it did! Give her a follow on Facebook and enter her contest to win one of your own! Or you know, just buy one.
  2. We’ve needed a new sofa for a long, long time. Our animals absolutely destroyed our other sofa over the past five years but I really didn’t want to shell out the money for another one, especially as we paid a lot for the first one. Long story short.. we found a good deal on this one and bit the bullet. While I was initially quite resistant, I’m now very happy about it. Also, I don’t care if they are trendy or not – I don’t think I’ll ever not have a sectional. They are my favourite.
  3. If that wasn’t enough, we picked up a kitchen island as well. We first seen it at a friends house and actually thought they had it built, only to discover it was from Canadian Tire! It doesn’t match our kitchen so I’ve debated painting it but regardless, it gives us some extra storage space as well as counter space. Plus the leaf is extendable, which makes it great for parties. We bought it on sale and it’s totally worth the price. It feels much more expensive than it is! For Living Kitchen Island.
  4. I bought snowshoes (not this exact pair) from a coworker, however, I haven’t used them yet. Good intentions, bad follow through. Here is a similar pair from Amazon.
  5. I accidentally bought the regular Marcelle Face Powder when I meant to buy the illuminating version. I also accidentally bought it in shade “medium”. Surprisingly, it actually works as it’s still quite transparent, even on my ghost-like skin. You get a ton of product here – I’m convinced I’ll be using it for the rest of my life. So far I like it but I still want to try the glowy version.
  6. The L’Oreal Pro Glow foundation has been around for a while but it has taken me this long to try it. I love the Pro Matte version and I had high hopes but my initial thoughts were disappointing. I will definitely be testing it out again so fingers crossed that the second time is a charm!
  7. I can’t even find the NYX Bare With Me Primer on their own site and I’m not sure why as I believe it’s a new product. There is a jelly version, however, this is the regular non-jelly primer. I’ve only used it once yet as I’m trying to finish my other primer first.
  8. I was also in need of a new concealer, so I grabbed the Essence Camouflage + Matt Concealer for a change. This isn’t available on Amazon Canada so if you’re curious, go to your local Shoppers Drug Mart. It costs $5 or less and so far, I really like it.
  9. Not pictured, but I also picked up a few items at the thrift store. I’m planning to show those on Instagram soon, so follow me there if you are interested!

Okay, that’s it for January! If there’s anything that you’d like to see a review on, leave me a comment below. Most of the makeup (except the powder), I haven’t really used it as I’m trying to finish up my other products first (nearly there!). Also let me know if you like this type of post or not! I like to keep track of my purchases and share my thoughts & opinions so I’d totally be down for continuing this each month if you guys are interested.

2020 Bucket List

Wednesday, January 8, 2020

I can’t even jokingly say “New year, new me” because here we are on January 8th and I am only just posting my 2020 goals. I was actually inspired by a friend of mine (thanks Jill!) to create a bucket list for this year, rather than a list of resolutions. Let’s be honest – I’ve put “exercise” and “drink more water” on every New Years Resolution list for the past ten years. Have I done it yet? Nope. So rather than a generic list of things I should do, I made a fun list of things that I may actually accomplish (hopefully) (I still added exercise).

Also, hello. Long time no see. Nothing like the new year to do my annual blog revival. I’m not making any promises but I’m going to try posting at least once a week. It’s not my full time job, nor will it likely ever be, so I don’t want it to consume all my free time. However, I do miss sharing and writing so here we are.

2020 Bucket List

1. Read at least 12 books | This has also been an ongoing goal for me, one that I haven’t achieved in many years. One book a month should be totally attainable. I’m trying to read a little bit each night before bed rather than browsing on my phone. Follow me on Goodreads and hold me accountable.

2. Save $10,000 | I don’t like to talk about money on the blog, though I’ll happily discuss money with you in person! This is a lofty goal but I’m putting it out there anyway.

3. Try 2 new (local) restaurants | This should be easy to achieve in the sense that a) I love to eat, and b) it’s only two. However, we’ve found so many great places to eat locally that we just want to visit those all the time, rather than try new places. * Restaurants while traveling don’t count, obviously.

4. Try 2 new recipes a month | While I love food, I tend to cook fairly basic meals on a regular basis (protein, carb, green thing). I’ve taken a liking to cookbooks lately so I’m planning to try and change up our meals and try new things! (We’ve already achieved this for January as we have tried 3 new recipes thus far… killin’ it).

5. Go to the gym | I’m not specifying when I’m going to start or how often I’m going to go. I just need to go. Period.

6. Switch to locally made skincare products | I’m not saying my skincare will be 100% local, but I’m hoping that it’s mostly local, natural products by the end of the year. I ordered some goodies from Spruced up Labrador for Christmas, so expect some reviews on that soon! And feel free to leave me recommendations for your favourite Newfoundland/Labrador-made products.

7. Run a 5K | I walk-ran a 5K a couple years ago and haven’t attempted since.

8. Visit Twillingate | I’ve never been to Twillingate, at least that I can recall. We always travel outside the country each year but rarely spend any time exploring our own province. I’m dying to go to Split Rock Brewery as I’ve tried a few of their beers & they’ve been delicious!

9. Hike 3 new trails | I didn’t realize how many fitness-related goals I had on this list until now. We did one new trail last year, I’m aiming for three this year.

10. Visit 3 new countries | As long as our cruise this year goes ahead as planned, we should have no trouble accomplishing this one as we are anticipating stops in St. Lucia, Barbados and Antigua.

I stopped at 10 because quite frankly, that seemed like enough. Hopefully this blog will still be kicking by December 31st, 2020 so that I can come back and re-evaluate how I did.

Do you have any resolutions for the new year?

FabFitFun Winter 2018 Subscription Box Review

Wednesday, February 6, 2019

This post contains affiliate links, which means I make a small commission if you click and/or purchase through the links.

What is FabFitFun?

FabFitFun is a quarterly subscription box that features a mix of lifestyle, beauty, fashion, fitness, and wellness products. Each box costs $49.99 US + $8 shipping to Canada (free shipping to the US) and contains over $200 worth of product. FabFitFun gifts full size products which is a big reason why I love it! I don’t know about you, but I definitely have more than enough sample-size items kicking around.

You can read my review of the Fall 2018 subscription box here. If you want to subscribe to FabFitFun, click this link and use code “FIRSTBOX” for $10 off your first quarterly box!

Winter 2018 FabFitFun Box

This has been my favourite FabFitFun box yet! While it was heavy on the beauty/skincare products, I was a-okay with that.

FabFitFun Winter 2018 Hair Products

Moroccan Gold Series Argan Hair Mask ($49)

I’ve used this a couple times and while I’m not fussy on the scent, I do think it’s a good hair mask. It is incredibly thick but doesn’t leave my fine, thin hair weighed down or greasy.

Oribe Gold Lust Dry Shampoo ($44)

Oribe is all the rage around here lately and I was shocked to receive the full size dry shampoo in this box! I definitely wouldn’t pay this price tag personally as I feel there are much more affordable options that work just as well. However, it smells nice and does the job.

FabFitFun Winter 2018 Makeup & Skincare

Sherrie Matthews Acupuncture Jade Stone Roller ($45)

I was able to select this product in my box and I decided to go for it because I was curious. Again, there are cheaper options available. I’m not sure that it does all that it claims, however it is said to aid in reducing the appearance of fine lines, reducing inflammation and puffiness, improving skin tone and lymphatic drainage. It feels nice and cooling on the skin so I will definitely continue using it.

Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick in “Meringue” ($26)

Nothing better than receiving one of my favourite lip brands in my box! If you haven’t tried the Bite Amuse Bouch lipsticks, you’re missing out. The shade “Meringue” is described as a “peachy neutral” and is super flattering. Not exactly a “winter” shade but I’ll still get lots of use from it.

Thrive Cosmetics Briliant Eye Brightener in “Stella” ($24)

While this is a very pretty highlight, I haven’t found myself reaching for it. As a rule, I typically just put a bit of eyeshadow in the inner corners of my eyes as a highlight.

Blaq Eye Masks with Hyaluronic Acid ($29)

I tried these out for the first time a couple weeks ago. They were quite slippery and difficult to apply but once they were on my skin, they adhered fairly well. They felt really cool and my undereye area did appear less puffy after!

FabFitFun Winter 2018 AHAVA Skincare

AHAVA Hydration Cream Mask ($33)

I first tried AHAVA many, many years ago in a different subscription box. I really like both products that I’ve tried from them. You can leave this mask on for 10-15 minutes then rinse off, or you can leave it on overnight. I’ve been leaving it on overnight as my skin is really dry in the winter. It’s non-greasy and leaves me feeling hydrated by morning!

FabFitFun Winter 2018 Lifestyle Items

WAY OF WILL Elevate Essential Oil Set: Sweet Orange Oil & Eucalyptus Oil ($31)

Essential oils frighten me a little bit. I want to diffuse them but I’m also afraid due to their toxicity to animals. I haven’t tried to use these in any other way yet, but I may pick up some dryer balls to pair with these.

Mark & Graham Colorblock Throw ($49)

This is no longer available on the Mark & Graham website, but who doesn’t love an extra throw? I would have preferred to get this in the grey color as brown doesn’t match our color scheme right now, but I will hold onto it and likely re-gift it.

January 2019 Favourites

Sunday, February 3, 2019

Much like Kerri, I miss the way blogging used to be. Don’t get me wrong – I love learning about blogging, I love that you can now earn a living from your blog, and I love all the advancements that have been made in blogging. However, I miss the days of feeling like a close-knit community. I miss when I didn’t feel the need to write “perfectly” or share only the prettiest, most curated images.

I want to bring back the joy in blogging. Recently, I discovered the blog Coming Up Roses and fell in love. I love how Erica writes like she’s talking to you as a friend. It’s so refreshing to read something that doesn’t sound like a magazine article for a change.

In any event, one of my favourite things to do is share my favourite things with you. I wish I could be like Oprah and just buy everyone my favourite things but unfortunately my wallet would run away screaming. Therefore, I’m bringing back my current obsessions post. Without further rambling..

January 2019 Obsessions

January 2019 Favourites

Krista’s Vlogs | You may know Krista from her super popular fashion & lifestyle blog, Covering the Bases. Recently, Krista has started uploading daily vlogs from Monday to Friday. I’ve always been a fan of hers but honestly, her vlogs make her seem so relatable. Plus I love all the snippets of life in New York City!

Saje Peppermint Halo | I put this in Jordan’s stocking at Christmas but I’ve been using it myself! While it doesn’t take away my headache, it definitely eases the pain and makes it much more bearable until the pills kick in. It has such a cooling sensation that it totally distracts me from the pain as well.

Smart WiFi Plug | Jordan gifted me this for Christmas because I am famous for leaving my hair straightener turned on. Honestly, 90% of the time when we leave the house, I find myself pondering if I shut it off or not. Thanks to this plug, I can shut it off via an app on my phone. Eases my mind and bonus: it’s super affordable too!

Line a Day Journal | This is actually my second 365-day 5-year journal. I ended up quitting on my first one a few years ago but I’m currently into my second year on this one. It’s so fun to look back and see what I was doing on each particular day last year & how it compares to this year.

Pixi Glow Tonic* | I don’t know this works but I swear it makes my skin look better. It makes my skin brighter, smoother and virtually diminished a pimple overnight!

Quartz “Elia” Jacket | I received this as a Christmas gift to replace my Canada Goose jacket. Prior to choosing this jacket, I did a lot of research comparing the two brands. I’m happy to report that this is just as good if not better than the Canada Goose jacket I had in terms of warmth. I’m 100% happy with my choice and the fact that it’s Canadian-made is a bonus.

Blogging | Ok, this one is a little cheesy but seriously, I’m really enjoying blogging right now. I’m seeing a big increase in my site traffic, making a little bit of money (finally!), and enjoying some really awesome PR partnerships. Looking forward to growing even more this year!

What are your favourites for the month of January? Leave a comment below!

2019 Goals

Tuesday, January 8, 2019

You guys, I’m already a little stressed about the fact that it is January 8th. January is normally such a long month and it feels like this one is just flying! I can’t believe that we’ve made it to 2019. When we got engaged in March 2017, this year felt like it would never arrive. Up until right now, I haven’t made any concrete goals or plans for this year and in fact, I sat down to write a different blog post. However, it feels like a right of passage here on this blog to at least attempt to make some goals for the year, so here we go.

  1. Blog Weekly | I really want to grow my blog this year. I want to collaborate with local stores, restaurants, and other businesses. My goal is to blog at least once a week here, whether it is here or on my cruise blog. Ideally I’d like to blog more than that but full-time work and real life tends to get in the way.
  2. Lose 10lbs | I had great success with Arbonne’s 30 Days to Healthy Living Program. I’m planning to do another round and try to maintain it at least 70/30 until the wedding. I also really want to start doing yoga again, for both my physical and mental well-being.
  3. Put Myself First | It has never been a more important time for me to practice self care. I don’t want to be a frazzled, stressed out bride so I’m putting myself first. That means lots of personal development, quality time spent doing the things I love, mental health days, and saying “No”. It also means getting rid of toxic people and things in my life that only bring me down.

That’s it. I am keeping my goals simple this year because I have enough on my plate right now. Cheers to a happy and healthy new year! I can’t wait to see what 2019 brings!

Arbonne 30 Days To Healthy Living Review

Saturday, December 8, 2018

This post contains affiliate links.

As mentioned in my previous post, I decided to participate in Arbonne’s 30 Days To Healthy Living Challenge for the month of November. Initially I had planned to do a week-by-week update but unfortunately life got in the way. However, if you’re interested in reading about my first week, as well as some information about the program itself, click here.

My Weight Over The Years

I’m going to rewind this story back to August for a bit. When I first stepped on the scale on August 1st and seen 137.8lbs, I nearly passed out. When I graduated high school, I weighed 97lbs. Throughout my university life, I weighed anywhere from 106-112lbs. After a bad breakup in 2013, I dropped back to 95lbs again. In hindsight, that was definitely too small for me (despite my 5’2″ stature). However, my normal in the following years was anywhere from 110-118lbs.

Around the time of our cruise in 2016, I was hovering around 128lbs. It was at this point that I became really unhappy with my body. I’ve always been curvy but up until this point, I was satisfied with my weight and appearance. I started dieting and exercising off and on, but never really stuck with a plan.

The Breaking Point

Fast forward to this year and suddenly I was at 137.8lbs. I couldn’t understand how I let my weight spiral out of control but let’s be honest, it happens. I’m getting closer and closer to 30, my metabolism has slowed down, and aside from walking 10,000+ steps a day at work, I don’t do any form of exercise. Not to mention that we had gotten into the bad habit of eating out frequently and snacking on chips and candy on a regular basis.

At this point, I knew I had to do something. I had been thinking about the Arbonne 30 Days To Healthy Living Program for a while but to be honest, I wasn’t ready to bite the bullet just then as we were getting ready to go on a cruise. Instead, I made little changes, like swapping out my sugar to monk fruit, cutting back on bread and other carbs, and increasing my water intake. By making these little changes, I managed to get my weight down to ~132lbs.

However, after my cruise, my weight was back up to 134lbs and I was ready to hop on the Arbonne bandwagon. I personally know people who had great success with it and I also knew that if I spent the money, I wouldn’t quit on myself. Side note: I also read “Girl, Wash Your Face” by Rachel Hollis while I was on vacation which is all about not quitting on yourself (highly recommend!).

Arbonne 30 Days To Healthy Living

Week one was tough as my body was adjusting to a) eating less, and b) eating less frequently. At first, the shakes only kept me satifisied for a couple of hours, but over time they satiated me from meal to meal. Cutting out gluten wasn’t difficult as much as it was simply inconvenient. I replaced my regular bread with gluten-free bread and honestly, that was fine. I bought gluten-free pasta or substituted zucchini noodles and replaced chips with gluten free snacks like these and these. No, the difficult part for me was cutting out cheese. I only drank cashew milk anyway and I gave up yogurt easily, but cheese and butter.. that was rough. I tried dairy-free cheese and it was okay, but not worth it.

The good thing is that you don’t have to cut out these foods forever. However, gluten and dairy cause issues for a lot of people, often unknowingly. I know that I can’t tolerated milk, ice cream or copious amounts of dairy, but I am fine with moderate amounts of cheese. Personally, I didn’t notice much difference by cutting out gluten, though I definitely experienced less bloating. For those with acne and skin problems, I’d highly recommend a trial of removing those products from your diet.

Week two and three were easier once my body started to adjust. As I mentioned in the last post, I decided to add my own probiotic back into my regimen as I was having an IBS flare up during the first week. It took about two weeks to completely settle but I didn’t have any issues after that. I was supposed to complete the 7-day body cleanse during week three but I think I only did 3-4 days. It is a gentle cleanse (as advertised), but in my field of work, you cannot go to the washroom whenever you like. Therefore, I didn’t want to do it on days when I was working. I definitely feel as though it cleared some of the sludge and waste from my body though.

Week four was a struggle as we were so close to the finish line. While I enjoyed my shakes, fizz sticks, and detox tea, I was ready to eat the Christmas cookies in my fridge. However, we made it through and we were so pleased with ourselves for sticking with it.

Arbonne 30 Days To Health Living Results

From November 1st – December 1st, I lost exactly 6lbs (134 -> 128) and Jordan lost 12.6lbs. Jordan didn’t do measurements or photos but I did and I lost 7 inches. I lost everywhere that I had measured, ranging from 0.5″ on my arms to 2″ on my hips. My clothes fit more comfortably, I feel better about myself, and I no longer cringe at how I will look in a photo.

Between cookie parties and 30th birthday parties, we definitely didn’t follow the plan 100%. For the first half, I’d say we were 80/20 but by the second half, closer to 70/30. We also didn’t exercise once during the month. We are relaxing and enjoying the holidays this month with all intentions of jumping back on the bandwagon in January. After all, we have a wedding and a honeymoon that we need to look good for!

After a week of not eating properly since the program ended, I was afraid to step on the scale. Suprisingly, I had only gained back 0.6lbs! I also have less desire to eat fast food or junky food now because it honestly doesn’t taste as good. I’d much rather have a fizz stick than a glass of soda and I’d prefer a detox tea over a sickly sweet holiday drink.

It really is a lifestyle change and not a fad diet and you can see for yourselves that it works. While I did sign up as an Independent Consultant with Arbonne, this is an honest review of the program. If you are interested in completing the program, please get in touch via e-mail, Instagram or Facebook. I will be happy to work with your budget to help you acheive your goals. FabFitFun Fall 2018 Box

Here’s what I received my Fall 2018 FabFitFun box:

FabFitFun Fall 2018 Review

Vince Camuto Luck Tote ($128)

Look at the price tag on this baby! While I personally wouldn’t pay $128 for it, it’s a great tote for throwing a few items in for an overnight trip. For an everyday bag, I prefer something with more structure and pockets.

Alfred French Press Coffee Brewer ($22)

I’m not a fan of coffee personally, but I know that coffee lovers swear by a french press. This one is cute, albeit not the highest quality. Hopefully Jordan will use it but if nothing else, it’ll look nice in our kitchen.

Catherine Malandrino Umbrella ($39.99)

An umbrella is such a practical item that I actually didn’t own until now. This is the kind of thing that I wouldn’t purchase for myself, but I do appreciate receiving it.

Simply Whimsical Tea Towels (14.99 – set of 2)

Who doesn’t love cute tea towels? I love that these are neutral and will match most decor. They fit in with our grey kitchen perfectly and seem to be good quality as well.

FabFitFun Fall 2018 Review

Grown Alchemist Hydra-Repair Day Cream ($49.00)

I’m trying to clean up my skincare and focus on products that aren’t filled with chemicals. This day cream is free from parabans, synthetics, fragrances, silicones and animal derivatives, amongst others. While I’m not fussy on the scent, I do love the packaging and the product itself. It keeps my skin hydrated and my makeup applies beautifully on top of it.

Beauty Blender ($20)

While I’ve been using the Fenty version of the original Beauty Blender lately, I am so not mad about receiving one of these! Honestly this is something that I repurchase every few months and it’s always nice to have an extra one stashed away.

GlamGlow Bubble Sheet Oxygenating Deep Cleanse Mask ($18 – set of 2)

I haven’t used this mask yet but I can’t wait! GlamGlow always makes awesome masks and I’m sure this will be no exception.

FabFitFun Fall 2018 Review

Cuccio Somatology Yogahh! Detox Bath ($39.95)

I’ve used this epsom salt bath a few times now and I really like it! It has a fresh, spa-like scent and it does seem to help my sore, aching muscles.

SKIN&Co Roma Blue in Capri Shower Gel ($22)

This has a “wild sage and lemon” scent which smells clean and refreshing. It leaves my skin feeling soft and while it may not be the most hydrating, it doesn’t leave my skin dehydrated either.

Total Value: $353.93 US

There was also a snack bar included in the box but I ate that before I took photos, oops! It was super yummy and I’ve been keeping an eye out to see if I can find it locally.

I love FabFitFun and if you like what you see, I highly encourage you to sign up! Don’t forget to CLICK HERE and enter code “WINTERFUN” to save $10 on your first box!

With Mother’s Day right around the corner, now is the time to get shopping! If you haven’t started yet, or if you don’t know where to start, I’ve created a handy list of ideas for that special lady. All of these items are available on Amazon which means that you can order them now & have them in time for Mother’s Day! I tend to buy my mom gift certificates and flowers for Mother’s Day and while I’m sure they are appreciated, I decided to think outside the box this year. Of course, I didn’t include her gift in this list just in case she decides to read my blog!

Self Care Sunday: How To Cope With Your Post-Olympic Blues

Sunday, February 25, 2018

I’m all about self-care practices and in fact, I’d like to make this a regular feature on the blog. And while I do hope to offer some helpful advice, today’s post is meant to be taken lightly. If you’re feeling like me (and most of Canada) right now, you’re bound to be sad that the Olympics are over. It’s funny because I don’t even like sports! I’m not athletic at all, I’ve never played sports, and I don’t normally enjoy watching them. But as soon as the Olympics come on, I am glued to the TV 24/7. I become the most patriotic Canadian ever. And now that it’s over, I feel an Olympic hangover coming on. If you’re suffering as well, consider the following ideas to help you get over your post-Olympic sadness.

FIND A NEW HOBBY | I’ve spent my day studying blog-related courses but if you’re not a blogger, consider picking up reading again, redecorating a room, or trying a new sport! Maybe you’ll be the next famous ski jumper.

SLEEP | Because of the 12+ hour time difference, the most recent Olympics really wrecked havoc on my sleep schedule. I feel like I’ve been running low on fuel for the past 16 days! Take the next week to head to bed early and recuperate.

SHOP | If you’re not ready to give up on Team Canada yet, head over to The Bay and pick up some Team Canada gear for yourself. I picked up a pair of the mittens myself, but I also really want the toque and the now-sold-out flannel shirt (bonus: get 5% cash back with Ebates!).

MAKE TRAVEL PLANS | We already know that the 2020 Summer Olympics are going to be held in Tokyo, so why not plan a trip to watch them in person? Two years gives you lots of time to save money and do research on all that there is to see and do in Tokyo. If you’re like me and prefer the winter Olympics, start planning for 2022 in Beijing!

If you’re still not ready to give up on the Olympics, grab the most Canadian tea you can find (like this one!), curl up in a blanket, and grab a book (like this autobiography by Tessa Virtue). I’ll link a couple other Olympic-related books below! I’m definitely adding these to my to-read list.

Of course, you can always fall into a rabbit hole of Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir fan-girling too. I won’t judge. In fact, I’ll likely be rewatching this performance until the next Olympics.

Janine Allison 2.0

Thursday, February 1, 2018

You guys, I’m back! While I was relishing all my free time, I was also going crazy without a creative outlet, so here we are! I have big plans for this little blog in 2018 which means that I have to push aside all those feelings of self-doubt and embarrassment and just do what make me happy. I finally made the switch from Blogger to WordPress, thanks to all the help from my amazing hosts. I also updated the look of my blog with a stunning layout from She Shoppes, so now the fun begins!

What do you want to see on Janine Allison?

I’m still marketing myself as a lifestyle blog with a focus on beauty and weddings, as well as my favourite local restaurants, shops, and events. One of my goals for this year is to really focus on supporting local businesses and I’d like to incorporate that into the blog. If you have any thoughts or suggestions, leave me a comment below or send me a message on social media!

 BLOG GOALS for 2018
  1. Gain 500 Bloglovin’ followers
  2. Gain 1500 Instagram followers
  3. Obtain two PR contacts
  4. Blog at least twice per week all year
  5. Get over my fear of speaking to the camera on Instastories

I think those goals are totally reasonable, though #5 is probably the one I will struggle with the most! Anyway, I’m going to keep this short & sweet but be sure to pop back over the next few days as I write more content! I am so, so excited to start this adventure with you guys.

The Friday Five | August 25, 2017

Saturday, August 26, 2017

1. I’m rolling in with a late post today because of work. However, I really wanted to get it done because you need to run over to Old Navy and pick up this adorable t-shirt while it’s still available for $9.50! As in, less than ten dollars. I’ve had Starbucks orders more expensive than this t-shirt. I’ve been loving graphic tees lately and I mean, this basically summarizes me in four lines, plus it’s super soft and perfect for lounging in on the weekends.

2. In other news, Taylor Swift officially released her latest single today! I mean, with all the hype that she garnered this week, this is old news by now but it deserves a mention regardless. I’ve been a fan of Taylor Swift since the beginning (as in, when I used her “Tim McGraw” lyrics in my MSN messenger status!) and although I am sick of her always playing the victim, I kind of like the new single. I mean, as a rule I am generally underwhelmed and let down by her first single off every album and this one has a weak chorus but I love the beat and the dark vibe. I have high hopes for this album!

3. My birthday week is next week! Sadly that means less as I get older (plus I have to work on my birthday which should never be allowed) but on the bright side, there will be cake and presents so it isn’t all bad. It blows my mind that I will be 28 when I feel like it was only yesterday that I turned 8 years old.

4. As much as I love fall, I’m not ready to say goodbye to summer yet. However, one of the best parts of fall is the return of all your favourite TV shows and after watching the trailer for season 2 of This Is Us, I’m slightly more excited for fall to arrive. Also looking forward to the return of Scandal, Riverdale and The Voice!

5. I may try on my first wedding dress tomorrow, eek! I’m still debating because I’m half afraid that it will be “the one” and I won’t even have my mom there for it but the store that carries my dream dress has a sample sale that ends tomorrow and I feel like I just need to try it on. If it isn’t the dress for me then I will wait until later before I really dig deep into the shopping but I’m afraid the store will stop carrying this dress before I get to try it on. At the same time, it still feels way too early in my mind to be shopping for a wedding dress. Ah, decisions!

The Friday Five

Friday, August 11, 2017

I figured this would be a good week to introduce “The Friday Five” which is basically just five random things that I talk about.. on a Friday. Despite having a few posts drafted, I have no photos to accompany them because 12 hour shifts make photography impossible, so I figured this would be a good way to sneak a post in before the week ended!

>> We went to see Mamma Mia with Jordan’s niece last week and I highly recommend you check it out if you can! I’ll be honest, I’ve never been a fan of musicals so I was basically just tagging along for something to do. However, I ended up being totally captivated and now I kind of want to see more shows. It also made me really envious of those who can sing & dance so beautifully.

>> Speaking of dance, I just signed up for burlesque classes and I am super excited about it. I mean, I will probably be terrible but at least it will be good fun! I just need to find a pair of heels that I can actually dance in now.

>> I got my hair dyed a gorgeous smokey grey color earlier this week and while I think my hairstylist did a great job, I have to go back this weekend and get it lightened again. It looked really light in the salon but outside of there, it is just way too dark for me. Luckily they were able to squeeze me in for an appointment on Saturday as I really want it fixed before Brittany’s bachelorette party on Saturday night! My hair will probably need some serious TLC after this if anyone has any recommendations for hair masks or products.

>> The Jaclyn Hill Morphe palette finally has a relaunch date – August 22nd! I have been super on the fence with this palette. It is absolutely stunning and I want it but I have trouble justifying the ridiculous cost of shipping for us Canadians (plus customs at the door!). I decide that I will get it, then I get angry at the cost, then it sells out.. and repeat. Maybe I could splurge as a birthday gift to myself? Or maybe I will just hold out for the new Huda Beauty palette..

>> Does anyone else think that it’s absolutely ridiculous that Halloween items are popping up in stores already? I mean, it’s still the beginning of August and Halloween is the end of October. Who really needs to buy Halloween cookies right now? STOP. I love fall as much as the next person but I just want to enjoy my summer without seeing ghosts and pumpkins everywhere.

I’m headed to the city this weekend for Brittany’s bachelorette plus some end-of-exams celebrations with Jordan so it’ll likely be next week before I get another post up. Have a great weekend guys!
